Consumers Credit Union values sustainability, in addition to saving our members time and money. This is why we make it convenient to bank green, saving trees and fuel. Here are the top 5 ways you can make your banking habits more environmentally friendly.
By opting to receive your monthly statement notification by email you save paper, postage, and delivery costs. This reduces your carbon footprint and use of resources, including petroleum for fuel.
But eStatements aren’t just good for the environment—they’re also more convenient, with no more waiting on the postman. And you’ll love the security of knowing there’s no risk of your statement being lost in the mail.
2. Online and Mobile Banking
Back in the day, if you needed to check on your accounts or transfer money between them, you had to drive to an office. With Online and Mobile Banking you have your accounts at your fingertips. You can easily see all of your account activity and manage your money 24/7 without having to put gas in your car.
3. Online and Mobile Bill Pay
Save a tree and the costs of postage with Online and Mobile Bill Pay. You’ll never again need to write a paper check, as our free Bill Pay lets you make payments to virtually anyone, anytime, right from the convenience of your computer or mobile device. (Business accounts receive up to five bill payments per month for free.) Many bills can be delivered electronically directly to your Bill Pay—no more paper bills piled up on your desk!
Out and about and need to check your balance? You may have thought stopping by an ATM would be your best option, but it’s easier than that. If you’re signed up for TextBanking, just send a quick message and get a response sent right to your phone within seconds—no need for a printed receipt from the ATM! TextBanking can also show you your recent transactions, payment due dates, and more.

Yes, we’ve mentioned it once already. But signing up for eStatements saves the most resources of all of these options. Though on an individual level, saving paper and the fuel used in delivery may seem small, the more members sign up for eStatements, the more we can positively impact our environment.
Want the numbers? Each month our paper statement delivery uses 10 to 15 trees worth of paper—that’s 220 trees each year!
Visit ConsumersCU.org/eStatements to sign up. It only takes a moment, and Mr. Maple will thank you.

Let’s face it. Your checking account is the center of your banking experience. Consumers is proud to bring you options for checking that save you money (Seriously Free Checking) or earn you money (Interest Checking). With your Consumers checking account you always have access to free Online Banking and Bill Pay along with free online check copies and eStatements.
One of the standard options you have with all of our checking accounts is an Instant Issue Debit Card. Luke B. is a member who was blown away with the ability to come in the office and receive his new debit card that very day. “I walked out with my shiny new debit card in 10 minutes. I went to the gas station minutes later and used my new debit card. It was amazing.”
If you lose your debit card or your dog eats it, as member Elijah I.’s dog did last year, stop in. We’ll instantly issue you a new one.*
*Replacement cards may incur a nominal fee.
According to a recent Consumer Reports survey, close to one-fifth of consumers with checking accounts considered switching to a new financial institution in the last year. But many who want to switch, don’t – simply because transferring accounts seems too much of a hassle.
Consumers believes making your transition smooth is part of our job. We want to make the process pain free. Here’s your step by step guide to a smooth transition.
1. Open your new accounts before closing the old ones.
You’ll want to leave enough money in the old accounts to cover any purchases or payments still clearing through your former bank – and enough to avoid charges should your balance drop below the minimum before you close out the accounts.
Fortunately, our Seriously Free Checking accounts have no minimum balance to worry about. And since we make our debit cards right in the office, you’ll be set up to use your new accounts immediately – no waiting for cards to show up in the mail!
2. Change your direct deposit.
Give your employer the updated account information we’ll provide you. It’s that simple!
3. Update your billing information.
Paying bills is never fun, and if you had them all automated at your old bank, you’re probably hesitant to change your existing system. But don’t worry – we’ll walk you through the whole process.
Bring us your billing statements, and we’ll show you how to set up everything just the way you want it on our online Bill Pay.
4. Transfer any remaining funds and close the old account! You’re done!
As you start to use your new accounts, don’t hesitate to ask questions. We want to know how we can help make the transition even better!
Member and small business owner, Steve B., shares with us how electronic banking has made life easier – enabling him to be worry-free while running a successful architectural company.
“Online banking has been awesome,” explains Steve. “It’s the ease, simplicity, and flexibility (of the service.) It saves me money in stamps. It saves me time.” Steve uses a full range of products at Consumers Credit Union – including an array of business services – and he loves doing his business online.
“All aspects of my banking are taken care of – whether it’s sending out bills, transferring from one account to another, or accessing lines-of-credit. I can get it all done in one place – one website – instantaneously,” he says.
While Steve loves convenience, loyalty and local presence are what sold him on Consumers. “I appreciate dealing with someone local in my community. The people who work here are the people who live here. They give me advice. They help me get from point A to point B.”
As an architect, Steve is constantly looking for ways to grow his business and achieve personal and professional success. “Giving me the tools to succeed has been huge,” he adds. And having been a bank customer, his perceptions as a credit union member are entirely different. “I make suggestions and they are implemented. I talk to the people and they listen. I’ve never had any problems or issues, and, having “non-issues” in life is a great thing! “
