Multiple Sclerosis is an unpredictable, often disabling, disease of the central nervous system. It interrupts the flow of information within the brain and between the brain and body. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS.
Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 2.3 million worldwide.
Funds raised through events sponsored by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society support research for a cure and help address the challenges of everyone affected by MS. More than 79 cents out of every dollar raised goes directly to improve the lives of people living with MS through programs, services and research. Consumers Credit Union has been sponsoring and fundraising for Walk and Bike MS events for 10 years now.
“I was diagnosed with MS in July of 2009. In the beginning, I experienced a lot of fear, as the effects of MS are completely different for everyone. I quickly learned that it was best to be positive, find your inner strength and to get involved. This will be my fifth year participating in Walk MS. Each dollar we raise, each step we take, brings us a little bit closer to a world free of MS!” says Becky Nap, member service representative, who is one of our Consumers Walk MS Champions.
