Measure twice, buy once
A great deal on a major appliance isn’t such a great deal if you get it home and find out it won’t fit! Measure both the space the appliance will occupy, as well as doorways and hallways it will have to fit through. Also, take into account hallways that make a sharp turn.
Plan to replace your appliances when they are on their last leg rather than when they completely fail. This way you can take time to comparison shop and wait for a sale. You’ll get a better deal than if you have to make an emergency purchase.
Figure the full price
When comparison shopping, ask about delivery and installation fees. Ask if additional parts are required for installation and how much they’ll cost.
If you’re switching from an electric to a gas range, factor in the cost for a licensed contractor, too.
Get extra protection
Before you agree to pay for an additional warranty, find out if your credit card offers extra protection. When you use your Consumers Mastercard debit, Low Rate credit or Rewards credit card, you automatically get these two benefits:
- A 12-month extension on the manufacturer’s warranty.
- Price protection for 60 days following your purchase. Mastercard will pay you the difference if you see the item advertised at a lower price.
