Late last year, we were honored to accept a WOW Award during the Credit Union National Association’s Experience Learning Live Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. The WOW Award is given to the credit union with the best overall training program – one that inspires learning, teaches skills that go beyond the classroom and empowers employees.
Over the last two years, Consumers has revamped its onboarding and training program for new employees. The new program was rolled out in April of 2016, the changes reduce how much time new employees spend in the classroom, breaking information down into bite sized learning with more time built in between for reflection and feedback. Learning is based on real-life examples using the actual software and programs, enabling new employees to be trained and productive much more quickly than before.
Consumers also made training more fun. Spending the first week at a new job in a classroom learning about culture, history, and procedures is not only daunting, it’s scary! So our training team added games and activities to each training session that encourage memory retention and callback, and also gets new employees moving throughout the organization and interacting with our more experienced employees.
All this and more (like increased e-learning opportunities, more job shadowing, and check-ins with leaders and managers) helped us win the award. Our new training program saves us about $2,000 per employee each onboarding session, but what’s even better is that happy well-trained employees lead to happy, well-served members!
