Consumers Credit Union is proud to have been named “Michigan’s Healthiest Employer” in the 100 – 499 employee category by Crain’s Detroit Business and MiBiz.

Consumers celebrates the many employee success stories that have resulted from the Wellness Program that began in 2012. Staff have taken the lessons they’ve learned through the program’s activities and education and applied them in ways that improve their lives and those of their families, including giving up smoking, using diet and exercise to address heart-related health issues, and counteracting the effects of rheumatoid arthritis.

The credit union has long been health-minded in subsidizing gym memberships for employees, supplying fruit and healthy snacks in break rooms, and providing outstanding health insurance. Formalizing a wellness program was a logical next step. Employees demonstrated their agreement, with eighty percent immediately signing up to participate.

The overwhelming success of the program may have resulted from the fact that its goal wasn’t to save money on health related expenses, but to do the right thing for employees.

In talking with Crain’s, Shawn Premer, Vice President of Human Resources at Consumers Credit Union, described the bottom line savings that have resulted from the initiative as “Icing on the cake…. Quality of life has such a value, even without hard-line dollar savings. But reduction in health care claims speaks to the volumes of impact.”

Winners of Michigan’s Healthiest Employers were chosen following an evaluation of six components of a wellness program: culture and leadership commitment, foundational components, strategic planning, communication and marketing, programming and interventions, and reporting and analysis.

Consumers was also recently named one of “Michigan’s Best and Brightest in WellnessTM by the Michigan Business and Professionals Association. The credit union looks forward to wellness activities coming up in 2014, including the Consumers Sunburst Run, Walk MS, Relay for Life, Tour de Taylor, and Walk to End Alzheimer’s.
