Committee for Sustainability

What is sustainability?

Sustainability is based on a simple principle: Everything that we need for our survival and well-being depends, either directly or indirectly, on our natural environment. Sustainability creates and maintains the conditions under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony, that permit fulfilling the social, economic and other requirements of present and future generations. Sustainability transcends environmental concerns to encompass the social and economic wellbeing of our community on local, regional, national, and international levels. Consumers’ mission is “to provide quality, innovative products and services that contribute to the economic and social well being of our membership,” a sustainable principle. In 2014, Consumers has established an ad hoc Sustainability Committee to review Consumers’ environmental and socially sustainable practices, to document and celebrate our achievements, and identify actionable areas for improvement.

Goals

  1. To create a Statement of Commitment to Sustainable Practices to educate our team and members.
  2. To identify and document current practices that support the Statement of Commitment to Sustainable Practices.
  3. To identify 3-6 action items to improve our sustainability.
  4. To explore a potential partnership with WMU’s Office for Sustainability and Environmental Studies students.

Consumers’ Statement of Commitment to Sustainability

How we behave and what we believe reflects our values to our members, in our communities, and for our environment. Our employees are role models in making sustainable decisions and promoting practices that preserve the well being of future generations.
