This week, Consumers Credit Union was selected as a 2012 Best & Brightest Wellness Champion in Michigan. Only 35 companies in Michigan were chosen for this prestigious honor. The Best & Brightest™ Wellness Champions is an innovative initiative that recognizes and celebrates quality and excellence in work site health promotion. The program highlights companies that encourage a culture of wellness, and those that plan, implement, and evaluate efforts in employee wellness promotion.
Consumers unveiled its first formal wellness program to employees this year. Our leadership team made the conscious decision to design a wellness program that was focused on doing what was right for our employees. The program emphasizes education and provides one-on-one coaching to each employee to help them determine what wellness goals are appropriate for them individually.
Wellness isn’t just about eating right and exercising to lose weight. Wellness is about being balanced and making good decisions for long-term wellbeing. Our program helps employees take a holistic approach to their total wellbeing. This approach has proven successful for our employees and the credit union. We experienced a 75% employee participation rate in all facets of our program. This is astounding considering that participation is 100% voluntarily and employees are not financially incented directly for taking part.

In addition to being recognized as a Best & Brightest Wellness Champion we have seen significant improvement (nearly 20%) in our health insurance claims losses. While we cannot attribute 100% of the decrease to the wellness program it has had a significant impact.
Consumers has been a “healthy” place to work for many years. We subsidize gym memberships for our employees, provide fruit and healthy snacks in our break rooms, and offer outstanding health insurance. Our formal wellness program has simply taken our healthiness to the next level. At Consumers wellness isn’t just an initiative it is part of our culture.
