To Buy or to Lease?

Happy Family in car ready for travel

So you’re looking to get into a new car. The age-old question is…do I buy or should I lease? Many times, the decision between buying and leasing is not a financial decision but a lifestyle choice. Below, our valued partner AAA points out some of the major differences between buying and leasing. In the end, it may boil down to personal preference. Ownership Buying – You own the vehicle and get to keep it as long as you want it. Leasing – You don’t own the vehicle. You get to use it but must return it at the end of the lease unless you decide to buy it. Up-front costs Buying – They include the cash price or a down payment, taxes, registration, and other fees. Leasing – They typically include the first month’s payment, a refundable security deposit, a down payment, taxes, registration, etc. Monthly payments Buying – Loan … …continue

Preparing Your Car for Winter

Winter Driving

From a mechanical aspect, winter conditions—wet, cold, and icy weather—present the greatest challenge to your vehicle’s operating efficiency. Since these conditions cannot be avoided, prepare for winter by performing a complete vehicle checkup in the fall. Our valued partner AAA suggests that you check, or have your mechanic check, the following items: Electrical System Battery – Have your alternator or generator, voltage regulator, and drive belts checked also. Ignition System – Damaged ignition wires, a cracked distributor cap, or worn spark plugs can make starting difficult or may cause a sudden vehicle breakdown. Lights – Make sure all your lights and lenses are clean and functioning properly. Grime on headlight lenses reduces their effectiveness by as much as 90%. Brake System Have your brakes checked regularly and do not delay any necessary maintenance or repairs. Tires Make certain your tires are properly inflated and in good condition. While it is … …continue

Snacking? Spacing Out? Distracted Driving Comes in Many Disguises

Distracted Driver

Our valued partner AAA offers these tips to remind you to drive safely this summer. It’s important to stay focused on driving, because many around you are not! Did you know that, while driving one mile, you make about 20 decisions? And that your brain processes countless sensory cues from inside and outside your vehicle? Add to the mix answering your cell phone, searching for something in the glove compartment, or even thinking about work when you should be thinking about driving—and you are flirting with danger. Distracted driving is a factor in one million crashes in North America annually. The Myth of Multitasking People multitask, but our brains don’t. Scientists have learned that our brains don’t process more than one stream of information at a time. Behind the wheel, that means you’re either focused on driving or—at least for a few critical seconds—you’re a distracted driver operating a moving … …continue

Putting More Dollars in Your Gas Tank? Avoid Unnecessary Debit Card Holds

Gas Pump

With gas prices close to—and on some days over—$4 per gallon, are you driving differently to save money? When you’re already putting more dollars in your gas tank, the last thing you want to have happen is an unexpected hold on your checking account from using your debit card at the pump. Why would this happen, you ask? Since the gas station doesn’t know how much gas you’re going to buy when you prepay at the pump, they want to make sure you can afford to fill up—so they authorize holds of $50, $75, even $100. The trouble is that these holds don’t fall off immediately. If you only purchased $15 to top off your tank, that extra $35-$85 remains unavailable until the station processes the transaction and the hold falls off, which doesn’t happen immediately. If you didn’t know about the holds at the time and were cutting it … …continue

AAA recommends drivers address the following key areas to prepare your vehicle for a road trip and to safely survive high summer temperatures: Tire Pressure Only one out of 10 drivers check their tire pressure correctly once a month, according to the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA). Traffic safety experts estimate having under-inflated tires can wear your tires twice as fast and may cost you upwards of several hundred dollars in wasted fuel each year. Changing Oil … …continue
