Sustainability Update: As the Grass Greens, So Do We

Exciting plans are being laid by Consumers’ Committee for Sustainability to push new initiatives out to all our 15 buildings, including initiatives for a Sustainability Champion at each office, reducing paper consumption, encouraging recycling, and reusing office supplies. We’re also researching new ideas for making future building projects lean and green. We’ve also been taking a look at the things that we’re already doing well. Ordering supplies containing post consumer recycled content From January to October of 2013, our post consumer recycled content represented a savings or reduction of 323.14 lbs of greenhouse gas emissions equivalent, 2.47 trees, 1,483.31 gallons of water, 17.67 gallons of oil, and 2,473,397.46 BTUs of energy. Movies Under the Stars Sponsored by the Consumers Sunburst Run

Looking for summer fun for the whole family? Enjoy free movie nights al fresco! Bring a blanket or lawn chair, bug spray, and a flashlight (the park is not lighted) for a movie in Oshtemo Township Park each month this summer. Summer Features Thursday, June 19: DisneyNature’s Chimpanzee Thursday, July 17: His Girl Friday Thursday, August 21: Ghostbusters All showings begin at dusk, weather permitting. These free events are open to the public and cosponsored by Alamo Draft House Cinema and Oshtemo Friends of the Park, which is supported by proceeds earned from the Consumers Sunburst Run. Each year, proceeds from the run are used in partnership with local organizations that support our parks and family program. The run has helped fund the 2014 Flescher Field renovation project and Kalamazoo River Valley Trail’s Trick or Trail event, in addition to Movies Under the Stars.

Congratulations to our 2014 Dollars for Scholars Winners!

Consumers Credit Union is pleased to announce the winners of our annual Dollars for Scholars Scholarship Program. The credit union has been helping student members achieve their dreams of attending college for over 20 years. More than 90 scholarships have been awarded since the program’s inception. The Dollars for Scholars program is funded by staff on “Casual for a Cause” Fridays, as well as from coin machine revenue. This year, Consumers awarded 20 graduating seniors scholarships of $1,000 along with an iPad. Scholarship winners are not only exemplary students; they are excellent citizens in our community. Each applicant is evaluated with equal emphasis on academic achievement, community service, essay content, and letters of recommendation. Consumers Credit Union Breaks Ground for Grand Rapids Offices to Open this Fall

Consumers Credit Union is pleased to announce that construction has begun on two new office locations in Grand Rapids. A formal groundbreaking took place earlier today at the Gaines Township location at 1673 68th St. SE, Caledonia, MI 49316. Both offices will feature the latest in banking technology, including touch screen access to financial education and an online and mobile banking center for account access and demos. The 3,200 square foot floor plan consists of a full service lobby with a free coffee bar, children’s play area, and free wireless Internet access, along with a loan and member service area, drive thru lanes, and outdoor ATM. Bosch Architecture is the architect for both offices, and Kalleward Group is the general contractor. Work at the Gaines Township site has already begun. Relationship Manager Business Services, Eric Stoll, to Compete in Ministry with Community’s Chefs Against Hunger

On Thursday, June 5th, Eric Stoll, Relationship Manager Business Services at Consumers Credit Union, will be competing as a Sous Chef in Ministry with Community (MwC)’s 8th Annual Chefs Against Hunger at Cityscape in downtown Kalamazoo. The event brings together ten Executive Chefs from local restaurants to create three-course meals using ingredients from MwC’s own pantry with the assistance of a Sous Chef. To participate in the event, chefs collect sponsorships to support Ministry with Community, Kalamazoo’s only daytime resource center and shelter. The organization provides food, shelter, and fundamental services to Kalamazoo residents challenged with poverty, homelessness, substance abuse recovery, and mental illness. In 2013, MwC served 120,000 meals to their members, the individuals that they serve. Chefs Against Hunger highlights the challenges that MwC’s kitchen faces each day when preparing delicious, nutritious meals while relying on food donations—sometimes without staple ingredients like eggs, milk, or butter—for over 300 … …continue

Tour de Taylor: Cycling for Make-A-Wish

Grab your bike and ride for a great cause at this year’s Tour de Taylor. The event honors the life and giving spirit of Taylor Grainger, who passed away of cardiac arrest in 2007 at age 14. Funds raised go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan so that sick kids and families may enjoy some “Wish” time. Since 2008, Team Taylor has grown from seven cyclists to over 120 and has donated over $1 million to Make-A-Wish—that’s enough for 120 Wish Trips for sick kids and their families! In addition, Team Taylor has granted the wishes of seven local children and their families.
