Sharing Your Stories: A Peek Behind the Scenes

Video Shoot

When a member of our Consumers Family shares a success story with us, it makes our day. We’re here to cheer you on as you work toward your goals, whatever they are—saving for a down payment on your dream house, paying off your debt, planning for your future. Each year we look forward to our member testimonial shoot because we get to devote a full day or two just to listen to your stories and celebrate your success. This year was no exception. In the past, we’ve interviewed members on camera in our offices. This year, participants joined us at a studio in Grand Rapids, braving the snowy weather to make the trip. The crew from MotionPossible took over from there, guiding participants through a big group shoot, as well as individual interviews. Watch our video to see who you recognize! And keep an eye on our blog, newsletters, and … …continue

They Pushed Me to Go On

Dylan R.

Consumers Credit Union’s Dollars for Scholars Scholarship Program has been helping student members achieve their dreams of attending college for over 20 years. More than 70 scholarships have been awarded since the program’s inception. DyLan R. was a senior in high school when he received a Dollars for Scholars scholarship. He graduated from Western Michigan University this past winter. DyLan tells us, “The scholarship came at a time when we didn’t exactly have money to send me off to college, because my dad had suffered a heart attack. It really helped with making sure that I could afford school.” With the costs of higher education increasing every year, every bit of financial support helps. According to DyLan, Dollars for Scholars provided more than that. “I’m thankful for the trust Consumers put into me that really pushed me to go on,” he says. “Because I was awarded the scholarship, I had … …continue

They Know Who I Am

Karon K

When Karon sold her home in Nevada and moved to Holland, she was looking for a better return on her money from a financial institution with a small town feel. She found it at Consumers. “When I went to Consumers, they took care of me and explained everything to me. There has never been an issue.” Karon enjoys the welcome she’s received moving to West Michigan, where even strangers say hello on the street. At Consumers, she adds, “I walk in the door, and they say, ‘Hello, Karon.’ They know who I am. It gets me warm and fuzzy.” She has moved all of her accounts to Consumers and loves the convenience of her debit card. She says, “I just swipe it, put in my PIN, and take off. My daughter insisted that I use my card instead of writing so many checks, and it works well.” “I have one … …continue

An Easy Transition

Ryan B., joined 2011

When Ryan B. approached Consumers about his business accounts, he was looking for a certain level of service to simplify the transition. He says, “When we started, they sat down with us, they walked us through everything we needed to have in one place, to put all our accounting and banking needs in one spot.” With his business partner living in Kansas City, having multiple ways to access their accounts is just as important as face-to-face service. “With Online Banking, we’ve been able to seamlessly and quickly take care of things online in a fashion that just works. We both have access to the accounts, so we both can make deposits via ATMs. We can make payments online. We can have phone conversations,” he says, adding, “There are so many vehicles for service that we get here at Consumers as opposed to other places.” To learn how Online Banking can … …continue

We’ve Paid Off $23,000 of Debt—And We’ll Be Done Next Year!

Tool Kit

Meet Sue and Edward, Consumers members who have benefited from the free financial counseling services Accel offers to all of our members. In three years, they’ve paid down $23,000 in debt—and they’ve only got a year left to go before they’ll have paid it all off! Sue shares their story: Our debt started accumulating when we bought a house. It was an older home in need of some work, and we didn’t have much left over after the purchase to put towards those improvements. Before we knew it, we were going to home improvement stores almost every day and putting it on our credit cards. On top of that, we were planning our wedding, which we were paying for ourselves. Since all of our money was tied up in the house, we again turned to our credit cards to finance the cost. By the time we had our first daughter, … …continue

I Would Recommend It to Everyone

"I would recommend Consumers to everybody. I have total trust in them." -Kim R., joined 2010

Family is the most important part of Kim’s life, so it’s not surprising that when she opened her first account with Consumers, the rest of the family followed. “I have four children, and they each have an account. My older son actually had his house refinanced. When we were here, they mentioned that they could probably save him money, and they helped him refinance.” In addition to the family’s personal accounts, Kim and her husband transferred their business accounts to Consumers. They’ve owned their greenhouse for 26 years. Kim says, “With our old bank, we were getting fees that were just eating up our whole profit. Here, my free checking is totally free.” Kim has total trust in Consumers. “On a scale from 1-10, it would probably be 100.” That’s why she’s referred friends to Consumers as well. “I would recommend it to everybody,” she says. One of Kim’s favorite … …continue

I Feel Like I’m Number One

Jacob M

Jacob M., who joined Consumers in 2006, is into saving. He has multiple special savings accounts, which he descirbes as, “like an envelope system that happens naturally. I have savings for emergency funds, vacation, tuition, car repairs, all divided up.” For Jacob, it’s all about having peace of mind when it comes to his finances, and he knows you can’t find that just anywhere. “We’re not taught at a very early age how to manage money,” he says. “I believe the credit union does a great job of promoting advice and financial classes.” Even his checking account helps him save money. “I don’t pay anything for it,” he says. “And as a member, you get local discounts.” But banking with Consumers provides more than just savings. “What’s the point of having an account somewhere I’m not number one? I think that the biggest thing about being here is that I … …continue
